Omega- 3s & Smokers
The healthy fats in marine oils may help reduce damage to
the body from smoking, finds a new study. After four weeks of
supplementation with 2 grams daily of omega-3 fatty acids,
researchers found that short-term supplementation improved
stiffness in the arteries and the elasticity of blood vessels in
smokers.
While experts say that the only way to protect against the
harmful effects of tobacco is to stop smoking, Dr. Kathryn
Taubert of the World Heart Federation says, “We encourage
all people, both smokers and nonsmokers, to eat healthy diets,
which includes foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids.”
